ABOUT BIRDBRAIN
WHAT IS A BIRDBRAIN?

Welcome to Birdbrain, where our story actually hatched all the way back in 2018.
It all started when, Tim Risstrom, built his very first birdhouse in a flurry of sawdust, sunshine, and pure inspiration. What began as a home made Christmas present, quickly turned into a full blown avian obsession.
After years of perfecting the art of bird real estate, Birdbrain Birdhouses officially spread its wings in 2024. Now, we’re proud to offer handcrafted, personality packed birdhouses that you and the birds will love.
Thanks for flocking to our little corner of the internet, so go ahead, wing it and find the perfect birdhouse!

BIRDHOUSE CARE
General maintenance of your Birdbrain birdhouse will involve cleaning and re oiling of the timber each year.
Due to the harsh New Zealand climate, some natural movement of joinery is normal, however this should not effect the functionality of the birdhouse.
Regular oiling of your birdhouse will protect the timber and maintain the beautiful natural colour of the wood.
Resene Furniture and Decking Oil is recommended.
Birdhouses are not suitable for chemical based cleaning products.

BIRDHOUSE INSTALLATION TIPS
Pests
The biggest threat to New Zealand’s native birds are predators such as cats and stoats.
Mounting your birdhouse on top of a post will help to keep the birds safe from these fiendish creatures.
Location
Birdbrain birdhouses are built to withstand the tough New Zealand climate, so a nice open area is perfect.
Close proximity to trees is an advantage.
Posting Up
A sturdy 100mm X 100mm post is recommended for mounting your birdhouse onto.
If this is not available, consider a fence post, tree or mounted up against a wall.
Concreting
Ensure that the hole you dig for the post is deep enough and wide enough to keep the post stable.
Use fast setting, high strength cement to secure your post in place.
Mounting
Place your birdhouse on top of the post, and secure using 4 L shaped brackets and exterior screws.
Place one bracket on each of the fours sides of the post.
A minimum sized 38 mm brackets are recommended.
Filling Up
Mix 1 litre of boiling water and 1 cup of brown sugar in a large bowl or jug. Let the mixture cool down to room temperature.
Unscrew the top of the feeder and hold upside down to refill. Replace the bottom of the feeder.
